REAL SYNTHESIZERS and PORTABLE PIANOS

In trip-hop, the synthesizer can cover a lot of ground. And certain ones may be used by certain groups, whereas others might not be used at all by other groups.

Some of the most popular hardware synthesizers include:

- Roland Juno-106
- Roland Juno-60
- Novation Supernova
- Korg Triton
- Moog Minimoog and Moog Modular (pronounced "mogue" like "vogue")
- Yamaha CS-80
- Arp 2600
- Sequential Circuits Prophet 5
- Clavia Nord Lead 2 or 3
- Access Virus

Some of the most popular portable pianos include:

- M-Audio ProKeys 88
- Clavia Nord Electro
- Yamaha S90
- Roland RD-600
- Yamaha P-60

All of these can be, and are expensive. All the synths mentioned can basically only be bought used as they are now "vintage" (even though some came out in the early 2000s). The pianos are still commercially available. However, they are equally pricey. You can get all of these sounds virtually, again, for less than half the cost, with virtual instruments (and the sound is quite believable!!!) See the previous or next section.

M-Audio ProKeys88
Excellent Rhodes, Wurlitzer 200A and grand piano, plus several other awesome sounds. Great price, too... keys feel somewhat cheap, but the sounds are definitely worth the price.

Clavia Nord Electro
The industry favorite for portable Rhodes, Wurlitzer 200A, Clavinet, Hammond B3, and Yamaha piano. Great effects, too.
